Indiana Tech graduate student-athlete Leondra Correia, the USTFCCCA Women's Field Event Athlete of the Year in the NAIA who has won four individual and two indoor team titles during her career, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to recap her capturing the pentathlon, high jump and 60-meter hurdles crowns, along with earning All-America honors in the long jump and triple jump to score 38 points overall March 3-5 at the NAIA Indoor Championships in Yankton, S.D. Correia is the first female athlete to win the pentathlon, high jump and 60 hurdles since former Oklahoma Baptist and Kansas State All-American Akela Jones in 2014. Her 38 points, which included a fourth-place finish in the long jump and sixth-place performance in the triple jump, were more than any competitor in any gender accumulated in any division at the indoor nationals. Correia also would have placed fourth by herself behind Indiana Tech, William Carey and Concordia (Nebraska) with her point total. She examines capturing the team title in 2017 in comparison to this season, in addition to analyzing winning the 60 hurdles championship in 2019 versus this year. Correia revisits her rehabilitation from a torn LCL, in addition to missing the 2020 indoor season to give birth to her first child Leilani, and the challenges she faced to return to training and competition, especially during a pandemic. She also reveals additional obstacles faced in order to gain clearance with the NAIA to compete, and her motivation to not only be the top competitor at the meet, but help Indiana Tech win another women's team championship. Correia expresses gratitude for head coach Doug Edgar, who was selected USTFCCCA coach of the year in the NAIA, along with assistant Austin Roark, honored as top national assistant by the USTFCCCA, and assistant Wes Wheeler for their patience and flexibility with her training during the past six months. She also speaks about creating her own Health and Fitness platform, and her goals and aspirations for the outdoor season, including her excitement for racing again in the 100-meter hurdles.
