Broncos' VanCura wins NAIA title 03/08/08 - Grand Island Independent: Sports

St. Cecilia grad has chance to add more today

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. Hastings College's Scott VanCura captured the weight throw title Friday in the NAIA national track and field championships.

Scott VanCura won the event with a mark of 60 feet, 8 3/4 inches. The senior from Hastings St. Cecilia entered the event ranked third in the country.

VanCura has a chance to make it two titles Saturday as he's scheduled to compete in the shot put. He's ranked fifth nationally in the event.

Powered by VanCura's national title, Hastings finished the day fifth in the men's team standings with 11.75 points through six events.

Hastings also got points from Will Keesee, who tied for fourth place in the high jump. The Bronco freshman cleared 6-6 3/4.

Hastings' Scott Fritz placed seventh in the weight throw (50-2 1/2). Also in the weight throw, Bronco Turner Scholl was third in his flight (56-10 3/4) and HC's Josh Pinkelman was fifth in his flight (50-3 1/4), but neither qualified for the finals.
