Lisa Voyles, an Indiana Tech senior and a six-time NAIA track champion including the past three years in the 1,000 meters as well as a four-time cross country All-American, joins DyeStat editor Erik Boal to discuss pursuing a fourth consecutive championship in the event Feb. 29-March 2 at the NAIA Indoor Championships at Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings, S.D. Voyles, who has also won a distance medley relay crown indoors, as well as an 800-meter championship and 4x400-meter relay gold medal outdoors for the Warriors, is looking to become the first scholar-athlete in Indiana Tech track and field history to win four straight titles in any event. She is also attempting to become only the seventh female competitor in NAIA Indoor Championships history to win four in a row in any event, including the first student-athlete to achieve the feat in the 1,000. Voyles, who is also expected to race in the mile and the DMR, would also become the only female competitor to capture four consecutive NAIA indoor crowns in any distance event. She also analyzes Indiana Tech's pursuit of a fourth straight team title, which would equal the success of McKendree (Illinois) from 1999-2002 as the longest women's championship streak in NAIA indoor history. The Warriors also won four men's indoor team titles from 2014-17. Voyles revisits winning her first 1,000 championship in 2021 for University of the Cumberlands in Kentucky and how she admired the depth, versatility and team culture of Indiana Tech. She examines how significant her faith has been, on and off the track, throughout her athletic career, and what an instrumental role her spirituality played in Voyles' decision to transfer to Indiana Tech before the 2021-22 school year. Voyles also highlights how valuable and impactful the support has been from Coach Alex Kluchki, and how important his guidance has been during her collegiate experiences, both at Cumberlands and Indiana Tech. She shares how meaningful it has been to share championship experiences on relays with her Indiana Tech teammates, in addition to how significant it has been for her to witness fellow Indiana Tech student-athletes qualify for their first national competition or contribute to their first team title under the leadership of Coach Doug Edgar. Voyles also expresses gratitude to Indiana Tech assistant athletic trainer Morgan Clarke, both in helping her prepare for the NAIA championship meets and also assisting in her recovery in between events.
